Crime on the rise?

New study shows more Canadians believe crime is increasing

A new study from the Angus Reid Institute suggests half of Canadians believe crime is rising in their communities, and confidence in police is decreasing.

Over the last six years, the percentage of Canadians who think crime is increasing has gone from 30 per cent to 48 per cent.

Between 1991 and 2014, crime rates dropped in Canada, falling more than 50 per cent during that time, but since then crime rates have gone upwards.

The study also revealed that public perceptions of the justice system are following the same trend.

Confidence is decreasing in local police forces and the RCMP, but about half of Canadians still have confidence in these organizations. However, the latest data reveals this number is decreasing.

For Canadians who believe crime is on the rise, this view is considerably higher in the western provinces – British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
