Parks Canada issues warning about aggressive Banff elk

Warning is in place for Banff Centre and Tunnel Mountain Trails

Parks Canada is warning visitors and residents in Banff to beware of aggressive elk, after sightings of female elk that have “aggressively charged” at people.

The warning, issued Monday, is in place for Banff Centre and Tunnel Mountain Trails, until Dec. 1.

Parks Canada said female elk have been displaying defensive behaviour and reminded people to give wildlife plenty of space.

You should stay at least 30 metres away from elk and walk on open roads rather than trails to avoid stumbling across female elk or their calves, Parks said.

Parks also suggested keeping children within arm’s reach, dogs on leashes, and travelling in groups.

All elk sightings should be reported to Banff dispatch at 403-762-1470.
