BALTIMORE — Baltimore City School Police are investigating after two students allegedly brought guns to school at Maree G. Farring Elem/Middle School Wednesday.
Two boys, ages 9 and 13 have been taken into custody and charged with being in possession of handguns.
The 9 year old was charged with had a 9mm in his backpack, the 13 year old was allegedly in possession of a 40 caliber Sig Pro.
In a statement, the school system says: Two students brought guns to school and went together to a restroom, where one gun was fired. The guns were not used to threaten anyone, and no students were injured during the incident. Responding to the noise, school staff went to the restroom, where a shell casing was found. The school was placed on lockdown.
Police quickly identified and detained the two students, the guns were confiscated and secured, and parents were notified. The students will receive consequences in accordance with the district’s code of conduct and the law according to the statement.
A City Schools spokesperson said, “We are relieved that no students were injured in this incident, and commend the students and staff of Maree Farring for following safety protocols and responding safely, quickly, and calmly to the situation. Safety is our top priority, and we work daily to provide a positive environment for teaching and learning.”
The school system says staff and students experiencing anxiety as a result of today’s incident will receive support from the school-based team and mental health professionals for as long as necessary.
