Troilus Mining Joins VanEck's GDXJ in Quarterly Reshuffle

Troilus Mining will enter the VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF at the September 18 close, handing the Quebec-focused developer a standing block of passive demand for its shares.

Troilus Mining Corp. (TSX: TLG; OTCQX: CHXMF; FSE: CM5) said it will be added to the VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ) effective at the close of trading on September 18, 2026, as part of the fund's quarterly rebalancing.

Troilus Mining Corp. (OTCQX: CHXMF) will join the VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ) at the close of trading on September 18, 2026, the company said, with the change forming part of the fund's regular quarterly rebalancing. Troilus also trades under TLG on the Toronto Stock Exchange and CM5 in Frankfurt.

The mechanics are narrow but the consequence is not. An exchange-traded fund that tracks an index does not choose which shares to own; it buys what the index tells it to own, in the weight the index prescribes. Once Troilus is a constituent, GDXJ and any portfolio benchmarked to the same index become structural holders — buyers on the day of inclusion, and repeat buyers every time new money flows into the fund.

What changes for the share register on September 18

Index additions typically produce a concentrated burst of demand at the effective close, because passive managers minimise tracking error by transacting as close to the rebalance moment as possible. That is why inclusion trades cluster in the final minutes of a session rather than being spread over weeks.

For a junior developer, the second-order effects usually matter more than the one-day print. A permanent block of index ownership tends to deepen the order book, narrow bid-ask spreads and reduce the discount a large institutional buyer has to accept when building a position. It also widens the audience: funds and advisers who cannot buy single-name junior miners on mandate grounds end up with exposure through the ETF.

None of that changes the geology or the economics of a project. Index membership is a liquidity and distribution event, not a technical validation. But for companies at the development stage, where the cost and availability of equity capital is the binding constraint, a cheaper and more liquid share price is a real advantage when the next financing comes around.

Where the stock and the fund stood going in

The OTCQX line, CHXMF, last changed hands at 1.58, down 0.94% from the prior close of 1.60, with a session range of 1.53 to 1.75, as of the last trade at 20:00 GMT on Monday, September 14, 2026. That wide intraday band is characteristic of a thinly traded cross-listed junior — and precisely the kind of spread that index ownership can compress over time.

GDXJ itself closed at 120.89, down 3.60% on the day from 125.41, having traded between 119.08 and 122.51. That was a considerably heavier fall than the broad market: the S&P 500 (SPY) ended at $760.88, off 0.45%, the Dow 30 (DIA) at $524.49, down 0.25%, and the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) at $709.18, down 0.80%. Junior gold miners are geared to the metal and to risk appetite in a way index-level benchmarks are not, and a single-session move of that size in the fund is a reminder that passive demand arrives inside a volatile wrapper rather than replacing it.

Why quarterly rebalancing is the door in and out

The index behind GDXJ is reconstituted on a set schedule, and eligibility turns on objective tests — market capitalisation, trading liquidity, revenue exposure to gold or silver, and listing status among them. A company that grows into those thresholds is added; a company that shrinks below them, or that is acquired, comes out. Troilus's entry at the September rebalance means it satisfied those screens on the review date.

A company that grows into those thresholds is added; a company that shrinks below them, or that is acquired, comes out.

The same schedule that creates the buying creates the risk. Membership is not tenure. A junior miner that sees its market value fall or its turnover dry up can be removed at a later review, at which point the passive flow reverses. Investors reading an addition as a durable endorsement are reading more into it than the rules support.

The announcement was carried by BNN Bloomberg.

The Canadian junior mining context

Toronto remains the principal listing venue for the world's development-stage gold companies, and the funnel from a TSX listing to inclusion in a global junior-miner index is one of the few routes by which a pre-production Canadian name acquires an international shareholder base without a secondary offering. Troilus holds all three of the listings that widen that funnel — Toronto for domestic institutions, OTCQX for US retail and advisory platforms, and Frankfurt for European flow.

What to watch from here is fairly specific. First, whether turnover on TLG and CHXMF settles at a visibly higher level after September 18, or whether the inclusion produces a one-off spike and then reverts — the distinction separates a genuine liquidity upgrade from a single day's index trade. Second, whether the spread between the quoted bid and offer on the OTCQX line narrows from the wide ranges seen recently. Third, the direction of GDXJ's own assets: a fund losing money sells its constituents pro rata regardless of how any individual holding is performing, so flows into and out of the ETF now form part of the demand picture for Troilus shares.

How to read the inclusion

Treat this as a change in the plumbing. Troilus has not reported new results, revised guidance or announced a transaction; it has qualified for a rules-based index and will be bought accordingly. The value accrues gradually — tighter markets, a broader register, marginally cheaper access to equity capital — rather than in the form of a re-rating.

The offsetting consideration is that passive ownership makes a stock more sensitive to sentiment toward the whole category. On a day when the junior gold complex fell substantially more than the major US benchmarks, that cuts both ways.

Frequently asked questions

When does Troilus formally enter GDXJ?

Troilus Mining Corp. said its addition to the VanEck Junior Gold Miners ETF takes effect at the close of trading on September 18, 2026. The change is part of the fund's scheduled quarterly rebalancing rather than a one-off discretionary decision, meaning passive managers tracking the underlying index transact around that effective close.

Where does Troilus Mining trade?

Troilus has three listings. Its primary line is TLG on the Toronto Stock Exchange. It also trades as CHXMF on the OTCQX market in the United States and as CM5 on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The multiple venues give the company access to Canadian institutional, US retail and European investor flow.

Why does index inclusion matter for a junior miner?

Index-tracking funds must hold what the index specifies, so inclusion creates standing, non-discretionary demand for the shares. For development-stage miners that usually means deeper order books, tighter bid-ask spreads and a broader shareholder base — which in turn can lower the cost of raising equity capital for project work.

Does being added to GDXJ say anything about Troilus's projects?

No. Index eligibility is decided by rules-based screens such as market capitalisation, trading liquidity, listing status and exposure to gold or silver revenue. It is not an assessment of a company's geology, reserves, permitting progress or project economics. Inclusion is a liquidity and distribution event, not a technical endorsement.

Can a company be removed from the index later?

Yes. The index is reconstituted on a quarterly schedule, and constituents that fall below the eligibility thresholds — for instance on market value or trading volume — can be deleted at a subsequent review. Deletion reverses the passive flow, so membership should be treated as conditional rather than permanent.

How did GDXJ trade ahead of the change?

GDXJ last changed hands at 120.89, down 3.60% from the prior close of 125.41, with a session range of 119.08 to 122.51, as of 20:00 GMT on September 14, 2026. That decline was much steeper than the S&P 500's 0.45% fall the same session, reflecting the sector's sensitivity to the gold price and risk appetite.
